Result Interpretation |
NOTE: New CBC Diff Parameter, Immature Granulocytes Beginning Monday, June 12, 2017 the MGH Core, Yawkey, MG Waltham and Chelsea Health Center laboratories will report immature granulocytes (IGs) with automated white blood cell (WBC) differential results when a complete blood count (CBC) with WBC differential is ordered. Both percent and absolute IGs will be reported with age-specific reference ranges when the percentage of immature granulocytes is < or = to 5%. A manual WBC differential count will be performed for all specimens in which >5% IGs are detected by the hematology analyzer. IGs represent an automated measure of the total number of circulating promyelocytes, myelocytes and metamyelocytes. Prior internal studies have shown good correlation between the automated IG count and the manual WBC differential performed microscopically in the < or = to 5% IG range. Increased IGs may be seen in the setting of infection, sepsis, bone marrow stress, or other conditions. Although IGs do not include band neutrophils, there is evidence supporting the automated IG count to be at least equivalent to the manual band neutrophil count in terms of sensitivity and specificity, and superior in terms of reproducibility. |
