    Collection Instructions
Random urine. A first voided morning specimen may be preferred, a later and more dilute specimen may make small increases in protein, red blood cells (RBCS), or leukocytes (WBCS) that are excreted harder to detect. Label specimen with Sunquest Specimen Label. Refer to NWH Clinical policy on Labeling Laboratory Specimens for additional details.
    Order Message
If not run immediately, specimen should be refrigerated.
Urinalysis sediments are performed on all urines that have positive findings (blood, WBC, nitrites or protein) on the chemical urinalysis. Urine sediment does not need to be ordered separately.

URINALYSIS WITH REFLEX TO SEDIMENT (MICROSCOPY)
    Test Usage
Screen for abnormalities of urine; diagnose and manage renal diseases, urinary tract infection, urinary tract neoplasms, systemic diseases, and inflammatory or neoplastic diseases adjacent to the urinary tract. Careful microscopy of urine sediment on freshly voided, warm urine is important in evaluation of patients with nephrolithiasis. Urinalysis is pivotal in a wide range of disease states; see Related Information.
    Rejection Criteria
Improper labeling; specimens with fecal contamination; specimens >24 hours old; specimens collected in containers that contain boric acid; urine preservative tube greater than 72 hours old.
